Preconception and Pregnancy in IBD Clinic

By Vivian Huang

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) includes Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, inflammatory diseases of the intestines that cause significant symptoms and often require immunosuppressants or biologics for treatment.  The number of people affected with IBD is increasing rapidly and nearly 1% of Canadians will have IBD by 2030!    IBD often strikes during individuals’ prime reproductive years, creating significant challenges for those planning or experiencing pregnancy.   Active IBD increases the risks of infertility and adverse outcomes for mothers, developing babies and newborns, underscoring the need for specialized, multidisciplinary care. Recognizing this gap, Dr. Vivian huang launched the Preconception and Pregnancy in IBD Clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital in 2018 to provide expert guidance and support tailored to people with IBD who are considering pregnancy, pregnant, or recently postpartum.

We offer guidance on fertility, medication safety and disease management, while advancing research to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.  Research studies include the impact of IBD on breast milk, infant development and mental health during pregnancy.

Part of Canada’s highest-volume IBD program, the clinic is transforming care, training future leaders and shaping global understanding of IBD in pregnancy

Your donations will help us expand care, conduct more research into finding ways to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in IBD, and increase clinician training to meet the rising demand.

Please join us in improving access to this life-changing care.

Meet the Preconception and Pregnancy in IBD team

Sunday 30th Mar
Meet the Preconception and Pregnancy in IBD clinic and research team!  Our team includes IBD specialists and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, as well as residents and fellows, and medical student trainees who are interested in learning more about managing IBD in the preconception and pregnancy times of their patients' lives.

We also have research trainees from undergraduate students through to fellows, who are interested in contributing to the research towards finding ways to improve the care for people with IBD in the preconception and pregnancy tome periods.

Some of our research is also looking into potential early-life risk factors for IBD, so that in the future researchers may be able to find ways to reduce the risk of IBD.
