Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) often strikes during individuals’ prime reproductive years, creating significant challenges for those planning or experiencing pregnancy. Active disease increases the risks of infertility and adverse outcomes for mothers, developing babies and newborns, underscoring the need for specialized, multidisciplinary care. Recognizing this gap, Dr. Vivian Huang launched the IBD in Preconception and Pregnancy Clinic in 2018 to provide expert guidance and support tailored to this vulnerable population.
The clinic offers guidance on fertility, medication safety and disease management, while advancing research to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Research studies include the impact of IBD on breast milk, infant development and mental health during pregnancy. Part of Canada’s highest-volume IBD program, the clinic is transforming care, training future leaders and shaping global understanding of IBD in pregnancy
As the number of people diagnosed with IBD who are considering or experiencing pregnancy continues to grow, sustainable funding is essential to advancing Dr. Huang’s pioneering clinic; expanding care, research and training to meet the rising demand.
