RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute established an IBD Scientist position dedicated to IBD research. A first for Sinai Health, this position will be instrumental in advancing work to find the cause, and possibly cure, for IBD.
  • The Genetic, Environmental, Microbial (GEM) project is the largest global research project working to uncover the possible triggers of Crohn’s disease. A key contributor to the project since 2012, Dr. Williams Turpin is a renowned translational scientist who will continue to play a leading role in microbiome data analysis for GEM to decode and understand the complete genetic information of an organism – fueling further advancements in care and treatment.
  • Dr. Mantaj Brar has taken on leadership of the Colorectal Surgical Fellowship program, a prestigious international fellowship in collaboration with the University of Toronto. Fellows from around the world come to this program to develop a better understanding of how complex diseases like IBD present differently in patients, and how to deal with complications. Equipped with this knowledge, these surgeons will contribute to ongoing global advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of IBD. Dr. Brar’s clinical expertise in IBD and colorectal cancer will help him continue the legacy of the incomparable Dr. Helen MacRae in guiding the development of upcoming surgical talent.
  • In 2023, the support of donors like you made it possible for Sinai Health’s Advanced IBD Fellowship Program to accept the largest cohort of fellows to date, with six talented new fellows joining our team. Their research and clinical work is exploring topics like the vital role of optimized mental health for patients with IBD, understanding the relationship between cardiovascular disease and IBD, improving endoscopic skills that will reduce patient discomfort and risks, and more.
