In March 2019, during her first appointment with Dr. Kingdom, a MFM and the placenta guru at Mount Sinai, Steph mentioned that she had a minor stomach pain. With no other obvious symptoms, Dr. Kingdom caught that Steph was developing non-hypertensive HELLP. HELLP is incredibly rare. Less than 1% of pregnant women develop HELLP, and just 15% of those with HELLP are non-hypertensive. Even more rare was developing HELLP at just 24 weeks pregnant, before the third trimester. The only treatment option to save Steph's life was delivery. Sadly on March 28, 2019, Steph gave birth to our son, William at just 24 weeks pregnant. at under 500gm and 3rd percentile for his gestational age, William did not survive. He lived for 38 minutes in our arms, surrounded by love, before passing away.
HELLP is a disease of the placenta and has no cure. Up to 1/4 women with HELLP do not survive. It is also one of the few disorders that call for immediate delivery to save the life of the mother. Dr. Kingdom saved Steph's life, but sadly we were unable to save William's life.
After many years of mourning the death of our son, we would like to support Dr. Kingdom and the amazing team at Mount Sinai with a small fundraiser in honour of our son.
Every gift counts! Together we can help change lives and push the boundaries of discovery.
